check in, don’t check out
Often when you check into a hotel you need to check your values at the door. You give up on recycling, composting or using green alternatives for cleaning. You don’t need to do that here. We look after all of that for you, so you can have the luxury of the hotel experience without having to check your values at the door!
day to day green practices:
- The Gladstone Hotel has been GREEN AUDITED by Green Shift since 2003
- We are committed to using green products for the cleaning and maintenance of the building
- The Gladstone Hotel has an extensive recycling and composting program incorporated into daily operations.
- The hotel prefers suppliers of fair trade and organic goods and services. more>
- The Gladstone Cafe and Melody Bar serve fair trade, organic teas and wherever possible incorporate locally produced ingredients into menu items.
- The Gladstone Hotel promotes the use of public transit to hotel guests by offering Toronto Public Transit Day Passes for sale and free Transit maps at the front desk.
- The hotel promotes cycling and has a substantial number of Toronto’s signature ‘lollipop’ bike lock stands installed outside of the hotel.
- We do not sell or use plastic bottles in the hotel. Since stopping this practice in 2007 we estimate we have saved over 100,000 bottles from landfill (conservative estimate).
- The hotel encourages guests to re-use towels and sources laundry services from a provider with a green program.
goals of the policy:
- To prevent added landfill waste, improve recycling, expand the market development for the use of recycled/recyclable materials through lease agreements, contractual relationships and purchasing practices with vendors, contractors, businesses, and other public and governmental agencies.
- To generate less waste material by reviewing how supplies, materials, and equipment are manufactured, purchased, packaged, delivered, used, and disposed.
- To serve as a model for other buildings and property management companies in the City of Toronto to influence waste prevention, recycling, and procurement efforts.
green initiatives:
- guest rooms feature all natural amenities made locally by Honey Pie Hive and Herbals.
- The Gladstone purchases shares in a local CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) farm as part of its strategy to source locally produced ingredients. In 2006, the hotel launched a successful series of farm to table culinary events called Harvest Wednesdays which featured in season produce from Chick-a-Biddy Acres CSA farm. Harvest Wednesdays were so well received that the Gladstone plans to grow the series to an annual event.
- The Gladstone Hotel provides sponsorship support to green organizations. Past events include fundraisers for Toronto’s Bike Week, Habitat for Humanity , Green Tourism Association, Bullfrog, LEAF, Transit Cam, NaturoPack, Citizen’s Environment Watch and others.
