12-5pm Daily | 2nd FL Gallery Space
Opening Reception Friday Nov 2, 2007 | 7-10pm with a performance by Latin Jazz Artist Amanda Martinez + guitarist Kevin Laliberté
In her current work Rodriguez continues to explore her enduring fascination with the process of the journey, the path that takes us from one destination to another, and beyond. Reflecting on her recent travels to Morocco, Spain , Latin America and Canada, Rodriguez is interested not so much in the documentation of the journey but in capturing that which is intangible and lingers long after the journey is over, the beyond. In particular it s the interconnection with the people and the their land which seems to linger.
Like her journeys, Rodriguez’Äôs paintings evoke a sense of change and transition. The rich deep colours of autumn, a flock of birds flying across an infinite violet sky and the mysterious light of dusk are images which take us on our own personal journey. These images may refer to a specific place but with the passage of time, memory and the artist’Äôs meditative use of light and colour, Rodriguez transforms them into a universal image. These are emotive landscapes. They can be both energizing and contemplative.
The making of these works of art took place in Rodriguez’Äôs Toronto studio as she listened to her CD’Äôs collected on her trips. These included the flamenco artist Bambino as well as the Latin American singers Omara Portuondo, Chavela Vargas, Antonio Machin, and the Toronto based Latin jazz singer Amanda Martinez. Although the paintings were not driven by the music there is no doubt that the rhythmic flow of the music assisted in the transformation of the images. For this reason Rodriguez will be opening her exhibition with a performance by Amanda Martinez and guitarist Kevin Laliberte.
Rodriguez is a visual artist, lecturer and art commentator on the CBC program Here and Now. Her paintings are in major collections across Canada, including Hart House, University of Toronto, The Royal Bank, Olympian and York, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and the Toronto Sun, among others.
