Proudly Canadian & Local

During the extensive redesign, Gladstone House held a call to local artists, with a commitment to retaining its identity around art and creativity. The response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic – we received 524 applications! Gladstone House Curator Lee Petrie, and two art experts from the community chose the artists. Works include painting, photography, textiles, glass, ceramics, murals and more.

Art at Gladstone House focuses on local and regional artists, including a combination of permanent and temporary installations. Starting in the lobby, guests are greeted by art above the fireplace, and a spectacular hand-painted mural overhead. The stairway gallery and Studio Level feature rotating exhibitions and murals. Our Art Studio offers two artist residency spaces, and an area for workshops for guests and members of the community to explore. Stay tuned as Programming around these spaces is in the works!

Currently 41 guest rooms feature art and additional work will be added to the rest of the rooms over time.

Artist Spotlight

Peter Owusu-Ansah

Peter Owusu-Ansah is a Deaf visual artist. He believes we can communicate through our eyesight without words. In 2009, when he zoomed in one of his works of pop art, he became deeply curious about all the greatest colours imaginable. Using the pixel colours that connect the nature of life, Peter uses Photoshop to create compositions that vibrate with energy. His works are shown around Canada. In 2021, his work was acquired by TD Bank for its corporate collection and he won the Murray and Marvelle Koffler Founder’s Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair.

Peter Owusu-Ansah is endlessly inspired by colour. For each work, he is solving a colour or composition challenge. He composes his work digitally, and arranges and rearranges colours – sometimes more than 150 times – in order to find the right combination. Peter has incredible colour and pattern sensibility – the compositions almost vibrate with energy. The dazzling pop aesthetic of his work is a counterpoint to the heritage building, bringing a contemporary edge to the 132 year old hotel.
