May 5 - June 25, 2006
Gladstone 3rd and 4th Floor Public Spaces

Opening Reception May 5 2006 7pm to 10pm

This unprecedented showcase displays the remarkable- but rarely acknowledged -- range of photographic talent in Canada.

Drawing from the more than 200 photographers featured in Carte Blanche, a groundbreaking book on Canada's best photographers as selected by a jury of renowned arts professionals, this exhibition shows how Canadian photographers experience cultures around the world - and how they work within their own.

The work in the exhibition ranges from photojournalism in the bleakness of Haiti (Roger Lemoyne) to musings on concepts of perception and memory (Jakub Dolejs); from the severity of the Ukraine (Donald Weber) to dreamlike personal phsychologies (Eve K. Tremblay). These photographers and others in the exhibition contribute to a global image culture through comparisons and contrasts, by travelling and staying home, by constructing and documenting.

Carte Blanche will change the perceptions of Canadians -- and the world -- about photographic achievement in this country

Curated By: Catherine Dean & MaryAnn Camilleri
