The Gladstone Hotel is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Toronto. It was originally built in 1889 as a stylish hostelry across from the then existing Parkdale railroad station. It was designed by George Miller, the architect of the Lillian Massey building of the University of Toronto, in red brick with beautiful sandstone carvings. The location of the Gladstone Hotel, just east of Dufferin on Queen Street West, was one considered the western edge of Toronto and it provided accommodations to travelers from the Parkdale train station as well as visitors and exhibitors at the Canadian National Exhibition. The Gladstone Hotel has been described as an example of “unabashed architectural exuberance” utilizing details from the Greek, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance eras. The hotel was restored over a two year period to reflect the building’s architectural history.

Come enjoy a night of great music presented by the Toronto Blues Society 25th Anniversary!

24th STREET WAILERS provide Good tunes and Good times:
Lindsay Beaver (Drums and vocals) and Jesse Whiteley (organ/piano and vocals) began jamming and sharing music in mid 2007 while attending Humber College. Jesse was born into the Whiteley family who have established themselves over the decades in the Canadian roots music scene. Lindsay hails from Nova Scotia, which boasts a large blues community. As a result, these two musicians formed a natural and dynamic musical relationship. Over time they met fellow students Emily Burgess and Mike Archer who also shared a love of blues which helped them round out the rhythm section. Right from the beginning things seemed to click so they began to jam classic blues standards regularly.
Lindsay and Jesse began to introduce their original tunes that required more than a rhythm section could provide. They decided to add Jonathan Wong on the tenor saxophone and The 24th Street Wailers were born!
“When it comes to playing the blues, The 24th Street Wailers are the REAL deal” –Paul DeLong (Kim Mitchell, David Clayton-Thomas)

FATHEAD has performed on main stages across the continent at high profile events such as Fredericton’s Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, The Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival, The Montreal International Jazz Fest, The Toronto International Beaches Jazz Fest, Playing With Fire in Omaha, Nebraska, and Festival By The Sea in New Brunswick. They have performed in Washington, DC for the Canadian Embassy, at Buffalo’s Lafayette Tap Room Blues Festival, at Virginia’s famed Birchmere Theatre, as well as opening for blues icon B.B. King at Massey Hall in Toronto.

That they have been described as a Blues Tour De Force comes as no surprise. Georgia-raised lead singer JOHN MAYS has had a storied career that began in the Southern gospel tradition, crossing over into Doo-Wop, R&B and Blues, not to mention a stint with the Godfather Of Soul JAMES BROWN. Hooking up with band leader AL LERMAN (harp and saxophone) in Toronto some years later, FATHEAD’s core has remained constant since 1992, offering ace musicianship, soul stirring harmonies and incendiary live performances. The writing tandem of Lerman and bassist OMAR TUNNOCH have produced an impressive body of work that has enjoyed time on the US, European and Canadian music charts. Guitar ace TEDDY LEONARD (who left the band in 2006) is back and better than ever, along with iconic drummer BUCKY BERGER. Elements of funk, soul, and R&B are fused into the group’s strong blues backbone, creating a fresh sound that is immediately recognizable as their own.

FATHEAD is truly an original band with a sound immediately recognizable as their own. They have a ball wherever they play and it shows!

SHAKURA SAIDA is an international artist whose involvement in the Canadian music scene has been ongoing for the past 20 years, enriching the jazz, blues and classic R&B communities with her soulful voice, enthusiastic personality and commitment to music as an art form.

Whether speaking Swiss-German, French or English, Shakura instantly connects with her audience and at the same time richly demonstrates the multiculturalism that Canada prides itself on.

Her songs are delivered with aching, emotion-laced vocals and powerful guitar and keyboard work.

The Toronto Blues Society (TBS) was formed in 1985, by Derek Andrews, David Barnard and John Valenteyn. They wanted to ensure that blues music, an indigenous North American art form, was guaranteed a continued presence in Toronto. Although the blues scene at the time was thriving, it had almost disappeared during the late 1970s disco era. This suggested the need for an organization that would work to create a climate in which the opportunities for live performances, radio airplay and national touring that can make a career in music viable were being made available to blues musicians.

Coeur de Pirate aka french superstar Béatrice Martin is in Toronto (staying at the Gladstone) to perform on Q with Jian Ghomeshi CBC Radio Friday at 10am and 10pm.

She has graciously agreed to play a special set in the Gladstone Melody Bar before TNC on Thursday. This is a rare and unique opportunity because as of right now she does not have any planned Toronto summer concert dates.

Coeur de pirate || Ensemble from Dare To Care Records on Vimeo.

And the pictures here do not event giveaway the best part of it, so check it out. The first three photos below are of his piece.

On Sunday, 11 April, join us for a FREE bus beginning with a tour of the OCAD Professional Gallery (100 McCaul St) at 12:00 noon and visiting the Art Gallery of York University and Doris McCarthy Gallery, returning to OCAD at 5:00 pm.

Seating is limited. To reserve please contact Suzanne Carte-Blanchenot at 416-736-2100 ext. 44021 or scarte@yorku.ca by Friday April 9th.

Daniel Barrow: Emotional Feelings

Art Gallery of York University (AGYU)

31 March – 6 June 2010

This magic man traces his descent straight from nineteenth-century magic lantern practitioners, but as there was usually something unseemly happening in those shadows, this ex-Winnipegger throws some pervy curves into his retro-media projections. No sleight-of-hand, this time you, too, can participate in some of the back-and-forth jiggling and hand manipulation of the image! Who can resist getting a hand in and feeling those emotional feelings?

Emotional Feelings expands the dualistic themes of Barrow’s manually animated performance works: good versus evil, shame versus pride, experience versus innocence, and the balancing of one’s belief in miracles with an increasingly bleak and rapidly advancing future in four newly commissioned works for AGYU.

Peter Smith: You May Find Yourself

Doris McCarthy Gallery, University of Toronto Scarborough

3 March – 14 April 2010

Curated by Ann MacDonald

Organized by the Doris McCarthy Gallery in partnership with the Robert McLaughlin Gallery

In Peter Smith’s works, a universe inhales and exhales; domino dots and the heads of screws glisten like stars while oil-painted cars on clogged expressways carry passengers to unknown destinations. Smith is able to coalesce the bombardment of urban commotion and dollar store detritus into intricate harmonies that engage the eye, heart and mind—compulsively, yet gently enticing the viewer to recognize affinities in the midst of chaos, and that the headlights of cars may be enjoyed on the same plane as a multitude of stars in the sky.

You May Find Yourself is comprised of wall assemblages, sculptures, and large-scale prints, as well as a video component in which Smith describes his experience with mental illness, with candour and subtle humour. Consistent with his works, the videos present yet another facet to the diversity of understandings with which viewers may approach the world.

Superviscous: Works in Glass

Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) Professional Gallery

19 February – 28 May 2010

Curated by Charles Reeve and York Lethbridge

Haunted by fragility and an uncertain identity (ultra-thick liquid? amorphous solid?), glass rests uneasily at the intersection between art, design and craft. Including works drawn largely from Toronto collections, Superviscous brings together artists exploring this temperamental medium’s unstable nature. Jon Kuhn’s dazzling cubes are compacted universes full of colour and light. Tim Whiten’s subtle cast broom stands quietly in the corner, contrasting with Sandra Rechico’s satisfyingly crunchy shards on the floor. Through these and other works, the show explores the contradictory associations we bring to glass. Its eye-catching beauty is both strength and weakness. Is this inevitable attractiveness just a cheap — or costly — trick?

“The artists here explore the unique properties of glass in works that range from kitsch to conceptual,” explains York Lethbridge, Operations Coordinator at Onsite and Co-curator of the exhibition. “Their works reflect art’s historical use of glass and suggest how its application might continue to evolve as new technologies emerge.”
Superviscous also encourages connections between generations and locations by mingling mid-career and mature artists like Rechico and Whiten with much younger practitioners such as Tyler Clark Burke and Matthew Eskusche, and by including work from a range of cultural contexts throughout eastern Canada and the U.S.

Featured artists:
 Tyler Clark Burke,
 Do Ho Suh,
 Matthew Eskuche,
Faye HeavyShield,
 Nestor Kruger,
 Jon Kuhn,
 Scott Lyall,
Sandra Rechico,
 Colette Whiten, and
Tim Whiten.

Out There

The Art Gallery of York University is a university-affiliated public non-profit contemporary art gallery supported by York University, The Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council and our membership.

The AGYU is located in the Accolade East Building, 4700 Keele Street Toronto. Gallery hours are: Monday to Friday, 10 am–4 pm; Wednesday, 10am–8 pm; Sunday from noon–5 pm; and closed Saturday. Admission to everything is free.
