Chair design by Andrew Ashbury & Aidan Mitchelmore for Jorge Luis Borges as part of the chair project at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.
The poetry and short stories of Jorge Luis Borges are often driven by complex philosophical themes such as labyrinths, dreams, recursion, and infinity. Taking Borges’s stories as inspiration for our chair design, we experimented with various interlocking puzzles based on repeating geometries. The chair is a compound, three-axis, self-locking lattice. Our final form is particularity evocative of the infinite hexagonal shafts of Borges’s Library of Babel.
Come Up To My Room (CUTMR) is the Gladstone Hotel’s annual alternative design event. CUTMR invites artists and designers to show us what goes on inside their heads. Coming together in dialogue and collaboration, participants are limited only by their imaginations, making CUTMR one of the most exciting shows in Toronto. January 24 – 27, 2013.
