Department of Unusual Certainties is an alternative research and design studio working at the interstices of urban design, planning, public art, spatial research and mapping. The Department’s work is informed by one guiding philosophy – that the city is the physical manifestation of a long sequence of unusual certainties, each one simultaneously more unusual and yet more certain than its predecessor. The DoUC, who are Christopher Pandolfi and Simon Rabinyuk, are currently working out of the Gladstone.
Here are their top picks for local happenings:
1. DoUC recommends visiting Evergreen at the Brickworks and checking out the MOVE EXPO going on until October. DoUC is one of 10 featured designers looking at transportation and the future, their project explores new methods and opportunities within the food system.
2. The Pool – “Toronto has about 1 million outdoor pools. They are free and wonderful!”
5. The Back Patio at the Beaver for important conversations.
