Irena Perkovic, under the moniker REENIE, is an emerging Canadian soul-pop artist. Combining jazz harmony with catchy melodic vocals, she composes songs with a soulful edge that is fun and introspective all at once.
Reenie holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Victoria, where she studied percussion and composition. She wrote works that were read by the Victoria Symphony and Ensemble Contemporain de Montreal, while studying with John Celona and Cassandra Miller. While playing the west coast festival circuit, bars and clubs, and recording with her 7-piece funk band in Victoria and Vancouver, she learned to combine her classical training with a jazz sensibility, rhythmic drive and delicate construction of ensemble texture, resulting in a sound on her freshman album of 2012, produced in New York, which was deemed “the perfect soundtrack to your favourite daydreams.” – Sean Keough, the Martlett.
Reenie and her band are currently recording their sophomore album at the Canterbury Music Studios with engineer Jeremy Darby (Ella Fitzgerald, Keith Richards, Aerosmith), to be released fall 2013.
