Being Scene

Being Scene is an annual juried exhibition produced by Workman Arts in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Their mandate is to introduce the general public to the work of artists who have lived experience with mental illness and addiction presenting a cross-cultural portrait of the healing power of art in order to build a more respectful and realistic understanding of those recovering from mental illness and addiction. Each year the exhibition feature new works by approximately fifty emerging and established artists and has included original pieces by well-known Canadian artists. Works in the exhibit are for sale with one hundred percent of proceeds going directly to participating artists.
The 2011 exhibition will be traveling to three venues, over the course of six months. From June 1 – August 1 the University of Toronto’s historic HYPERLINK “http://www.harthouse.utoronto.ca/”Hart House will host a two-month installation. Following that, Being Scene will move on to a second two-month exhibition at the HYPERLINK “http://www.gladstonehotel.com/”Gladstone Hotel, Aug. 4 – Oct. 2. The dates will extend through the weekend of the HYPERLINK “http://www.parkdaleliberty.com/show_info.php?page_id=99″Queen West Art Crawl, which will see thousands of visitors through the exhibition during the final weekend alone. The final showing will be re-mounted at their arts space, Workman Hall, Nov. 5 – 13 during HYPERLINK “http://www.rendezvouswithmadness.com/”Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival.
Since its inception, Being Scene has partnered with some of Toronto’s leading artistic figures, galleries and institutions, making it an integral part of the city’s cultural landscape. Selected works of art that were initially displayed in the CAMH buildings have gone on to hang at such prestigious Toronto locations as Queen’s Park and the Lieutenant Governor’s Suite, in addition to Ottawa’s National Art Centre.

Workman Arts (WA) facilitates aspiring, emerging and established artists with mental illness and addiction issues to develop and refine their art form through its arts training programs, public performance/exhibit opportunities and partnering with other art organizations. As well, WA promotes a greater public understanding of mental illness and addiction through the creation, presentation and discussion of artistic media.
