MADE presents The Deadly Sins by Eric Mathew as one of a curated series of textile programs at the Gladstone Hotel.
Eric Mathew aims for a universal graphic appeal and the viewer’s identification with his imagery by employing familiar design conventions appropriated from contemporary logos, flags and advertising. Intended for public installation for the purpose of visual rupture, they elicit through their distinctiveness, questions surrounding the power and autonomy of the flag as signifier.
The hand sewn and applique`d series of flags originally created in 2006, represent a jumping off point from Mathew’s previously print-based practice towards installation work and pattern design for products such as hand woven rugs.
The concept of the seven deadly sins was used as a loose framework when developing the imagery of the series. The viewer should treat the reference as such and consider how these traits relate to our patterns of consumerist behaviour.
