Monday night the Melody Bar patrons were treated to a night of ambient folk-noir informed by the Icy Tundra, Southern Prairies, and the Mixedwood Plains. Soaring voices, plucked strings, smooth winds. The Billie Hollies headlined the night with special guests Demetra Penner and Jenny Berkel.
Opening the evening was Jenny Berkel. Born in the heart of Southwestern Ontario, surrounded by disappearing forests and spreading cities, Jenny Berkel has always had a deep awareness of changing landscapes and the tenuous thread by which we live and love. Jenny’s music has an unforgettable quality, finding root in the very landscape in which we love and wonder.
Demetra Penner with her silken voice reveals a wild soul of the world. Her songs speak to broad landscapes, icy tundra, and the solitude of the wild. They are manifested in bone-chilling melodies, haunting arrangements and the warm blanket of lush reverb.
The Billie Hollies blend their combined experience from the worlds of opera, choral, jazz, rock, and folk music to create a unique and eclectic sound. They were featured on CBC2′s Deep Roots where Tom Power described their “immaculate” sound as “classic femininity” and “eerie beauty”.
