In the west end of Toronto’s warehouse district, sometime in the early 90s, Donna Dooher expanded her successful catering business into a cozy little restaurant with a big, yet subtle bang. Appropriately named after the hardboiled novel by Jamie M. Cain in which a Depression era, middle-class housewife sets out to support herself and her children working in the restaurant industry (Donna is an advocate for women in the restaurant industry—high fives!), Mildred Pierce wasn’t your typical downtown dining experience. The homey feels and comfy vibes of the restaurant quickly made it a local favourite as it gained a reputation for having the best brunch in the city.
On the heels of success, #bosslady Chef Donna expanded Mildred Pierce into the Cookworks Cooking Studio which later led to hit Food Network show, The Cookworks. She also served as Food Editor for WISH magazine, and authored Cuisine Canada’s award-winning Out to Brunch with Mildred Pierce and the best-selling Market to Table cookbook.
As an active member of Slow Food and self-proclaimed ‘fork hugger,’ Donna’s newest restaurant reflects her dedication to supporting Ontario farmers and local agriculture. Nestled in the heart of Liberty Village, Mildred’s Temple Kitchen is made up of locally sourced, seasonal ingredients prepared with Chef Donna’s classic simplicity.
Join us for another delightful Harvest Wednesdays dinner on August 16 featuring Chef Donna Dooher.
