Producer Partners Chick a Biddy Acres

Located: Near Peterborough in the Trent Hills
Sherry and her farm inspired the Harvest Wednesday series, with Gladstone purchasing four shares of Chick a Biddy’s CSA. Sherry grows a plethora of fresh produce, as well as naturally raises heritage breeds of Tamworth pigs, Black Angus Beef and pasture-raised lamb. She also offers free-range chickens and eggs.

Scotch Mountain Meats

Natural, open pastured pork, lamb and beef.

CIPM Farm
Located: Sterling Ontario
CIPM is a certified organic cash crop operation, growing spelt, rye, spring wheat, buckwheat, soybeans, flax, hemp, oats and a heritage grain of red fife wheat. Red Fife Wheat, a variety brought to Canada from Scotland by David Fife in 1842. CIPM and a number of other farms have worked together to preserve the small amount of seed and once again it is stone milled into a whole grain flour using the entire grain. Red Fife Wheat, is also on Slow Food Canada’s Ark of Taste, which to put it simply, highlights foods that need to be preserved as they are or were close to becoming extinct.

St. John’s Bakery

They will be providing delicious samples of fresh baked bread. St. John’s Baker is one of Toronto’s finest and unique bakeries. They bake breads and sweats made with certified organic flours and ingredients. The bakery also uses CIMP’s flours and grains. St. John’s Bakery works to support an inclusive community.

Kawartha Ecological Growers

KEG is a co-operation of farms in the Kawarthas, that together, produce a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, herbs, eggs and meats (many of which are heirloom varieties, as well as maple syrup, honey, flour, pickles and preserves. Mark Trealout, a leader and producer of Grassroot Organics and founder of KEG is a rule leader in our food community and member of Slow Food Toronto.

Match Box Gardens and Seed Co.

They produce locally grown, rare and heirloom variety seedlings, seed, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers. Hanna and the team from Matchbox come from a Program called New Farmers with Farmstart, which helps young farmers learn about farming, planning, budgeting as well as provides incubator land for farming. As an advocate of city gardening they also offer landscape services with a focus on native and edible plants.

Monforte Dairy
Location: New location of Dairy – Stratford
Ruth Klahsen head cheese maker and owner of Monforte is, a long-standing partner of Gladstone. She believes in, sustainable practices, high quality cheese which helps to support the producers she works with. She is in the process of building a new dairy where she can make her infamous sheep’s milk cheeses. Monforte is introducing a CSA subscribers program, where you can invest in a share of her dairy now, where you will receive an equivalent amount of cheese once her dairy is open over a certain period of tem helping to establish a business model that should spearhead meaningful growth in micro-production, in the future. Food politics at its best!

Forbes Wild Foods

Forbes Wild Foods provides wild and foraged foods in fresh, dried and jarred form. They forage all products using sustainable and traditional methods, ensuring the future of these foods as well as respecting the environment they were grown in. Forbes has everything from, rose water, to spruce tips to Saskatoon berries. They harvest their unique foods in remote regions across the country.

Under Ground Organics

Shane and his partners, grow vegetables, herbs and most of all beautiful local fine and wild flowers in all varieties and colours imaginable. They never use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or fungicides. The farm is Certified Organic.

Guerrilla Gourmet
Location: Toronto
Maria is involved with urban agriculture, harvesting teas from local herbs and flowers. Maria makes teas from the items she forages and harvests as well as prepares soaps and bath products. Maria also hosts dinner parties, where guests prepsre their own facil products and then enjoy a dinner prepared with local produce. Guerrilla Gourmet also partners with Shane from Under Ground Organics and they will be sharing a table.

Kernal Peanuts

Yes, we grow peanuts in Ontario! Kernal Peanuts is the largest peanut farm in Canada. Once a thriving tobacco farm, Ernie and Nancy transformed the land into a peanut farm, where they now grow Valencia Peanuts. In addition to peanuts of all preparations and flavours, Kernal Peanuts also produces peanut butters, fudge and trail mixes.

Kupecz Family Farm

The Kupecz family raises grass-fed lamb (wool available), cornish hens, pheasants and hens. They also grow apples! They are LFP (local food plus) certified, use non-GMO feed and do not use any herbicides or pesticides on their land.

Bob Baloch

Bob Grows spinach, radishes, eggplants, okra, carrots, peppers and much much more. He is running his farm under the Farmstart incubator program which allows him to initiate his farm with the necessary support and land. Bob’s farm on one of Toronto’s Regional Heritage sites where the land has never been exposed to pesticides or herbicides.

Brooks Farm is a family run farm that has been past down through generations for 150 years. They host a pick your own strawberry and raspberry farm, grow asparagus, sweet peas, pumpkins and more.

Cookstown Greens

Cookstown Greens is one of the most well known organic farms in Ontario among local chefs. They grow impeccable, greens, edible flowers, spring vegetables, salad greens and much more. David Cohlmeyer is extremely involved with the local food movement in Ontario and is an advocate for local sustainable agriculture and a strong supporter of new young farmers.

100 Km Foods

100Km Foods is a distribution system bringing local food from sustainable farms in Ontario to restaurants and food establishments in the City. Gladstone has been a long-standing partner of 100Km Foods and has helped initiate new relationships with many producers for Harvest Wednesdays.

Not Far From The Tree (NFFTT)

NFFTT is an initiative that organizes fruit picking of residential homes in Toronto. A portion of the fruit picked goes to the homeowner, (if they would like it), the people who have picked the fruit and the rest is donated to a community agency. Now in its second year, NFFTT has grown and gained wide spread support.

Greenest City

Greenest City is a non-profit, community-based environmental organization committed to reducing pollution, regenerating urban life, and promoting social equity. They work towards building community capacity to grow local food production and increase security. They create community gardens, lead educational workshops, connect youth with employment, lead programs, festivals, environmental projects and cultural exchanges. Key aspects of their approach is to use community building principles and seek to include those who are often marginalized.

Westend Food Co-op (WEFC)

WEFC helps promote food security within the west-end of Toronto, by creating community driven food initiatives working towards a full service grocery store that focuses on selling products that are ecological, sustainable, local and healthy. The WEFC also coordinates the Sorauren Farmers’ Market.

Local Food Plus (LFP)

LFP is an award winning non-profit organization that provides certification for producers and processors. Standards for certification highlights the farm’s or processor’s economic, social, and environmental practices. The process for certification is a formal process where LFP brings in a third party to evaluate an application for certification which is thoroughly investigated. LFP also identifies producers and processors with local purchasers.

FoodShare

Foodshare focuses on food systems, from growing, processing, distribution, food purchasing, cooking and consumption. They operate grassroots projects that are driven by educational and food security issues that promote projects on healthy eating, teach food preparation and cultivation, develop community capacity and create non-market forms of food distribution.

Green Enterprise Toronto (GET)

GET is a local network of locally-owned businesses, manufacturers, service providers, food and beverage sources. Members of GET have a focus of building a green economy.

Slow Food Toronto
Slow Food Toronto is volunteer, membership driven movement founded in Italy in reaction to fast food culture that has graduated to an International movement. The three basic principles of Slow Food are Good Clean Fair. Slow Food Toronto believes that access to good, clean, fair food is an irrevocable human right and works towards building food community networks that include producers, artisans, chefs, food activists, youth leadership, and co-producers* (consumers).

The Good Egg

The Good Egg a fabulous bookstore in Kensington Market is a destination spot. Mika carries fabulous books, many of which focus on the related issues surrounding Harvest Wednesdays. The store also sells food related works by local artists, cooking tools and other truly beautiful items. The Good Egg also offers small cooking classes.

Steam Whistle Brewery
Location: Toronto
Steam Whistle uses only four, all natural ingredients (pure spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast), all GMO-free. Steam Whistle uses the unique green glass bottle which is made with 30% more glass. This means the same bottle can potentially be washed, inspected and refilled up to 35 times – about twice as many as the industry standard brown bottle. They also use Bullfrog power, have energy efficient lighting and water systems, just to name a few of their mindful initiatives. Flat Rock Cellars

Flat Rock Cellars offers Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. They produce low yields, progressive viticulture practices and hand picking and sorting the grapes. Gladstone carries Flat Rock wines.

Black Oak Brewery
Location: Etobicoke
Black Oak Brewery handcrafts, slow brewed, all natural beers that are created in small batches. They offer a Pale Ale and a Nut Brown Ale that are Gold Metal Winners in the National Great Canadian Brewing Awards. They also create some limited award winning seasonal beers.

Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery was established in 1988 with the first vintage. At that time we were one of a very few estate wineries dedicated to producing premium quality wines made from 100% Ontario grown grapes. Our focus is on vinifera grape varieties. Lailey Vinyard

Lailey Vinyard has been in the family since the early 1950’s and has transformed into vineyard dedicate to producing quality wine while respecting the vineyards terroir. Since 2003 Lailey Vineyard has eliminated the use of herbicides to control weeds and relies on mechanical and manual hoeing as they believe a more hands on approach supports the relationship between healthy soil that is rich in microbial life results in a more complex flavour of grapes.

Wellington Brewery
Wellington Brewery was based on the concept to produce English-style real ales for the Ontario market. Cask conditioned ales that are naturally carbonated, served at cellar temperature and drawn by a hand pump respect that the traditional heritage of beer production. Wellington is also part of the first wave of Ontario microbreweries that were brought about by changes to Ontario law allowing small breweries to operate in the province for the first time in decades.

Paul DeCampo is Co-Convivia Leader of Slow Food Toronto working with local sustainable producers, chefs and community to increase access to good, clean, fair food for all.  Paul is the Coordinator of The Good Food Box Program at FoodShare, which distributes healthy nutritious boxes of food to thousands in our community making top-quality, fresh food available in a way that does not stigmatize people, fosters community development and promotes healthy eating . Paul also teaches a course on Slow Food principles and resources to professional Chef students in the Italian Culinary Arts Graduate Program at George Brown College.

CIPM and a number of other farms have worked together to preserve the small amount of seed and once again it is stone milled into whole grain flour using the entire grain. Red Fife Wheat is also on Slow Food Canada’s Ark of Taste, which to put it simply, highlights foods that need to be preserved as they are or were cloise to becoming extinct. Because CIPM’s grains are not processed, they have a greater depth of flavor, hints of nuttiness and are simply delicious.

LFP is an award winning non-profit organization that provides certification for producers and processors.  Standards for certification highlights the farm’s or processor’s economic, social, and environmental practices.  The process for certification is a formal process where LFP brings in a third party to evaluate an application for certification which is thoroughly investigated.  LFP also identifies producers and processors with local purchasers.

FoodShare

Foodshare focuses on food systems, from growing, processing, distribution, food purchasing, cooking and consumption. They operate grassroots projects that are driven by educational and food security issues that promote projects on healthy eating, teach food preparation and cultivation, develop community capacity and create non-market forms of food distribution.

A tireless and energetic activist, Debbie Field has worked for over thirty years managing organizations, building civil society campaigns and raising millions of dollars. Her consensus-building leadership and skills as a political strategist at the community level has enabled progressive policy and legislative in the areas of food policy and nutrition, at all three levels of government. Debbie is a dynamic communicator and a regular spokesperson at large events and in the media.

For the past 17 years Debbie has been executive director of the award winning non-profit organization, FoodShare Toronto that works with multiple communities to improve access to affordable, healthy food through sustainable food programs. Since she came to FoodShare it has grown from a staff of 6 and a budget of $600,000 to its current staff complement of 40, 800 active volunteers, and an annual budget of $5.5 million. During this period FoodShare has launched some of Canada’s most successful social enterprises including the Good Food Box, the Toronto Kitchen Incubator, Field to Table Catering, Green Jobs and Student Nutrition programs. CIPM Farm

Wayne Roberts

Wayne Roberts, PhD, is a leading Canadian thinker and writer on sustainability issues, and the senior author of seven books, including ‘Get A Life!’ (a green economy primer),  and ‘Real Food For a Change’ (which focuses on food system reform and its implications for individuals, communities and the planet). He is the Co-ordinator of the Toronto Food Policy Council, on the Board of both the North American-wide Community Food Security Coalition and Food Secure Canada, and Chair of the Coalition for a Green Economy. In 2001, NOW Magazine named him one of Toronto’s top ten visionaries of the past 20 years. He was awarded the 2002 Canadian Environment Awards Silver Medal for his contributions to sustainable living.
