break-out exhibition by marianne katzman Nov 30 - Dec 5, 2007 | 12-5pm Daily | Art Bar Paint and canvas are the prime expression vehicles for kontort. The canvas is at once mirror and cage. It reflects as well as entraps. Even personal physical expression is categorized, pigeon-holed, the moment the brush touches the canvas. The simultaneous act of looking and painting demands self-scrutiny infused with reactions to societal norms. In that place, in that moment, the core of our humanity is exposed. Our similarities and differences dissolve. This series, kontort, explores the extent to which people are willing to push themselves to be the norm, to be accepted, to be successful; grotesquely twisted souls for these empty goals. The paintings delve into the experiences of every man/woman to find the masses ensnared in web of hopelessness and helplessness. The pieces examine the state of living in self-imposed, physical and mental cages, inevitably turning on each other when pushed to one's limits in desperate times. |
