Meet the Breweries & Cider Houses of 12 Beers of Summer
Our biannual 12 Beers (of summer and Christmas) event is back again on July 28th, and we’re as thrilled as ever to be working with some amazing breweries and cider houses to put together the ultimate tasting fiesta.
While these refreshing beverages are popular year round (and with good reason too!), summer is a particularly appropriate time to get people together to sample the best bubbles in town. Try something new, enjoy an old favourite, we’ve got them all covered!
Of course you’ll have to come down to the event to get the full low-down on all the delicious elixirs these taste-makers are crafting — their sampling staff are well versed in everything you’ll want to know — but we wanted to start you off with an introduction to all our attendees so you can learn a bit about why they’re so awesome!
You can also check out fun pictures from last year’s 12 Beers of Summer here
Note that these wonderful breweries will not necessarily be pouring their entire selection of wonderful beers and ciders. They might bring one of many classics, or a seasonal, or both; either way, the offerings are sure to be scrumptious!
These brew-masters have been a Gladstone staple since their bright blue cans hit our fridges. The Woodhouse Lager is a classic, and their more recent Woodhouse IPA and Woodhouse Wheat Pale Ale have been popping around town too! The Woodhouse team also know a thing or two about events, and their very own DJ Joel French will be spinning hot jams in the Ballroom throughout the night. Make sure to catch the whole team beside the DJ booth.
This golden ale is always a favourite at 12 Beers, and the Sweetgrass team really know their stuff. We’re thrilled to have some local business owners pouring their unique recipe in our venues. Make sure to ask them about the story behind Sweetgrass and give them some love on social media with the kickass #girlboss hashtag!
When it comes to Pilsner in Toronto, SteamWhistle is a classic. We’re excited to have them bring the signature SteamWhistle brew from their historic building to ours (and that’s in part what makes us a good match!) While you’re touring the Gladstone for 12 Beers, make sure to stop by and ask the Steamwhistle team about their amazing brew house too!
Another Toronto classic, Amsterdam’s brews can be found refreshing patio-goers day-in day-out. From their ever-popular Amsterdam Blonde through to their seasonal specialties, Amsterdam’s roster is impressive (check it all out on their website). Not to mention (in case you’ve been under a rock) the patio at the Amsterdam Brewhouse is one of Toronto’s quintessential summer spots.
After our last event, we got quite a few requests to add some more cider-houses to the roster. Excellent timing. Cider is hot this summer (only metaphorically, don’t worry), and we couldn’t be happier with having KW Craft at 12 Beers! Their KW Craft Sparking Dry Cider already has some awards under its belt (see details here), and it’s made with fresh local apples too. This is a cider your taste buds won’t want to miss!
With a consistently hot line up of great beers, Mill St. is always a tried and true favourite at 12 Beers. There’s some unashamed personal bias towards the Mill St. Organic here, but rest assured all their suds are worth a sip. We also love Mill St. for their musical inclinations. From the amazing acoustic performances they set-up for Earth Hour to the cool prizes and support they provide as a partner on our Thursday Night music series, this brewery shares our itch for great local talent.
With Tractor’s, great events (Oktoberfest!), and social/environmental consciousness, what’s not to love about these folks! And of course all their brews are phenomenal too — no matter what they have pouring at 12 Beers, it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser. We’re also throwing out an extra shout-out to Beau’s for supporting the amazing GoodFood Help at their upcoming fundraiser.
Fun fact: the Gladstone was built as a train hotel for the Parkdale station. These days, the trains just whizz by, but we’re still pretty fond of them. It’s a passion we share with Junction Brewery, who’s amazing Conductor’s Ale, “a hopbacked hyprid ale utilizing British, German, and American Brewing Techniques,” pays homage to West Toronto’s rich railway history. They’re just up the tracks from us — even if you have to take the Dufferin Bus instead of the train to get there.
Brickworks Cider House
The 501 Queen Streetcar is also engrained in our local landscape, and the team at Brickworks Cider appreciates that just as much as we at the Gladstone do. The Queen St. 501 is one of their two delectable ciders, both of which we highly recommend for any summer’s eve. We’re super excited for the 12 Beers crowd to try their amazing apple-ales, and we hope they’ll agree that travelling on the 501 Queen Bus hasn’t been quite the same this summer.
Make sure to catch Brickworks at the Toronto Cider Festival in August too!
From your favourite downtown bars to your favourite Ontario getaway spots, Ace Hill’s Pilsner and Vienna Lager are instant winners. Both brews are easy to drink —perfect for pleasing any crowd, and we can’t wait for them to woo our 12 Beers audience too! Plus they’ve got a great local story to tell about how they came to be (check it out here).
The delicious Pommies Cider and Pommies Farmhouse are sure to please everyone, from gluten-free aficionados to lovers of everything local. They’re also involved in some pretty cool events around Ontario this summer, including the environmentally sustainable and amazing Hillside Music Festival, so we feel really excited that they’ve added 12 Beers to their roster for the year. Make sure to ask them more about everything they’ve got on the go!
Hopsta La Vista is an award-winning brew that everyone needs to try once in their life. A gold medal at the Ontario Brewery awards is nothing to shake a stick at, and Longslice’s other brew — Loose Lips Lager — is dangerously drinkable too. We can’t wait to have them back (this ain’t their first beer rodeo at the Gladstone) as a tried-and-true fan favourite for our dedicated beer-drinking friends.
