PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

CUT & PASTE COLLECTIVE:
NATASHA BAILEY, CINDY GRENKE, MORRIS LUM

This series of works are based on Toronto landmarks. Collectively these artists have manipulated the urban landscape and transformed the historical, economical, and social values creating new identities. Their work explores and comments on the origins and contexts of these locations establishing new realities.

Cut & Paste Collective is a photo-based collective comprised of three Toronto based interdisciplinary artists. The collective was founded on the simple act of transposing one or more images onto another. By incorporating other mediums into photo-based work, the artists work around the Surrealist notion of the “Exquisite Corpse”.  Each artist works separately on an image passing it along to the next artist when they have accomplished their own complete interpretation.  The final work is an examination of each artist's idea layered one on top of the other.

LISA BINNIE

Developed over several years, this series of sparsely populated landscapes combines artist Lisa Binnie's two favourite mediums: photography and sculpture.

Lisa Binnie is a photo-based artist and sculptor. Lisa teaches creative approaches to photography in Toronto and Haliburton.

TALIA ERLICH

“Taking steps” evolved from an ecovention and installation on Toronto Island for a biennial outdoor exhibition called ‘rogue wave'. This work evokes reflection on the steps one takes (and leaves) in the landscape of life. Like the seawall, it also represents the ongoing story of community efforts to preserve the land against destruction. The photographic ‘reconstruction' serves as both a documentation and ongoing dialogue between lived experience and reflection.

Talia Erlich is an environmental artist who works out of a Toronto island studio in an eclectic range of media. She prefers to see her work as simply having an ‘eye for nature'.   Talia has a B.Sc. from U. of T. and a 3 yr. Diploma in art along with training in ecological design. She has been commissioned to do projects, installations and ecoventions by a number of arts and environmental groups in Canada and abroad.   She is currently artist-in-residence for the Toronto Green community and teaches earth-friendly art at every opportunity

STEVEN CLINE

Steven Cline's mixed-media works combine large-scale photographs with audio tracks of short stories that reveal more about the characters inhabiting each picture. His work draws on the conventions of film, sound, photography and literature.

Steven Cline is an artist based in Toronto. Steven had a solo show in July 2006 at Lennox Contemporary in Toronto and participated in the Gladstone's Nuit Blanche group show in September 2006.

STEPHANIE FYSH

Stephanie Fysh's photography continues an exploration begun as a student of literary theory and cultural history, of the interrelationships between the physical structures we build, the (material) culture we weave, and the selves we construct within those physical and cultural spaces.

Stephanie Fysh is a Toronto-based editor and publishing educator. She has previously exhibited in Toronto's Gladstone Hotel and Ballenford Books, and her work is held in private collections in Canada and the United States.

MICHAEL KRAUSS

Michael Krauss' series "Urban Fragmentation" will reflect the inspiration he draws from urban decay, scenic landscapes, architecture, motion graphics and typography. His photographs invite exploration within the multiple layers of each image. Taking one look is only skimming the surface. Each image demands time and curiosity to fully appreciate the beauty, uniqueness, and complexity of the urban elements presented.

Michael is a graduate of Dawson College, Quebec, a professional photographer and broadcast designer.

GABRIELLE DE MONTMOLLIN

Gabrielle de Montmollin's art is based on imagination, storytelling, play and mystery. She poses children's toys and dolls to create dramatic surreal imagery and narratives that contrast the dark side of the human persona with objects of innocence.

Gabrielle experiments with photo processes such as 'printthroughs' or paper negatives which are reversed, bleached, photocopied, drawn and painted on to create imagery which is nuanced, multi-layered and compelling.

DALE M REID

Dale M Reid found "looking through a different set of eyes after my life partner and soul mate was diagnosed with MS in 1985." Dale's outlook on life changed and Dale began capturing these views through the photographic medium. Through experimentation, Dale developed a photographic eye and a unique artistic style. In 2004, Dale left the corporate world to become a professional photographer. Dale's portfolio includes landscapes, industrial, urban, maritime, still life, floral studies and this ‘mystery girl series'.

CALEY TAYLOR

Caley Taylor presents “Recent Works: Photo Drawings” combining technical photography skills with loose, free sketching to create these works of surreal beauty. The result is a series of images that capture the everyday visual experience in a vibrant and captivating way.  “Photo Drawings are about seeing reality in a subconscious level. It's about using something imperfect, like a blurred photograph, and outlining the true focus to interweave your subconscious with everyday images."

Caley is a professional photographer based in Toronto. Taylor's life behind the lens began as a teen in a photography club at Havergal College. A training course in Mexico solidified her interest in the medium, prompting her to pursue a fine arts program at Mt. Allison University in New Brunswick.   Acclaimed photographer and mentor Thaddeus Holownia, was particularly influential and encouraged her to view her shots as images in and of themselves.   Caley also received a diploma from the Western Academy of Photography in Victoria, BC.   www.caleytaylor.com

ANGEL DI ZHANG

Do Models Have Souls? questions the nature of truth, and our perception of beauty. We live in an age of technological wonders where often the facsimile of something can be more compelling than the original. The photographs have been digitally painted using traditional processes of “dodging” and “burning” as well as modern techniques such as “slice”, “clone” and “heal”. The painting methods as well as the finished images are integral in the process of exploration. In some photographs it is obvious that the image is of a manufactured persona, in others the truth is not so obvious, until the viewer is left with a lingering suspicion.

Angel Di Zhang is a painter, writer, and fine art photographer. Angel studied at Columbia University in NYC under the accelerated BA/MIA program. She simultaneously pursued her commitment to third world economic development and environmentalism with the UN. Angel is internationally exhibited and her works are held in corporate and private collections in six countries. http://www.VividArtist.com
