ARTIST STATEMENT

This design evolved from several conceptual viewpoints.  My challenge was to incorporate the wall design previously executed by artist Paul Fortin. My idea was to create a symbol of controlled chaos suspended from the ceiling and contrast this with very plain, simple, but strong furnishings. I hung a high gloss, black chandelier and wrapped it in a transparent Indian fabric which stretches across the ceiling to the four corners of the bed where it changes into hand felted dreadlocks (created by textile artist Janelle Guthrie). This acts as a bed canopy and creates an intimate bed space. Amongst the chaos I wanted to create a sense of calm which is heightened through the gently curved steel council, desk, side tables & desk lamp (created by Sodi Designs, Toronto). The floating table lamps over the side tables were designed to evoke this calmness as well.

I brought natural colors into the room through the use of walnut, oxidized metals and dramatic green draperies. The green is repeated on the bathroom walls. I thought at first glance that the shapes on the walls were aquatic creatures and so I built on this theme incorporating a natural walnut as though I was building the bottom of a boat...but on the ceiling.  This wood was milled up and treated by local designers The Brothers Dressler who design and build their own beautiful custom furniture here in Toronto.
