ARTIST STATEMENT
The Trading Post is a hotel room with cabin like qualities, but also elegant, borderline decadent decorative elements.
The room has humorous qualities as well and tries to contrast rural, self-sufficient qualities against urban luxury.
Room 311 has a strong masculine feel yet strives to be comfortable and warm and give the dweller a feeling of calm.
ARTIST BIO
Matthew Agostinis is a furniture designer/maker who has recently graduated from Sheridan College's Furniture Design program in Oakville, Ontario. Selected pieces of Matthew's furniture have been displayed and sold at such galleries as the Wagner-Rosenbaum, One of a Kind show, Interior Design Show, Living Arts Centre and breakfast television. Past projects included the development and construction of prototypes for Harvest House Furniture located in Toronto, Ontario. Current projects include custom furniture and installations for residential and commercial clients in the GTA, and participation in the 2006 Interior design show along with Joel Harrison-Off. Matthew is currently a part-time resident artist in the wood studio at the Living Arts Centre located in Mississauga, Ontario.
Joel Harrison-Off is a graduate of Sheridan College, School of Crafts and Design Furniture Program. His work reflects his curiosity and exploration of the breakdown and rendering of natural materials (mainly trees) into usable shapes and tools by people. His work expresses his time spent outdoors; working within Parks Ontario, his work as a treeplanter and his own explorations of Canada. Joel's work ranges from custom commission pieces, to speculative designs for industry (clients include Harvest House, Small Space, Roomy Home) as well as personal speculative work for galleries (Distill Gallery, The Finds, Living Arts Centre Gallery, Wagner-Rosenbaum Gallery).
