Art Squared with Oliver Heinrich + John Cadiz

Art Squared with Oliver Heinrich + John Cadiz

Art Squared will combine two unique approaches in contrast with their long-standing friendship as art makers, one using only patterns without subject while the other uses dreamscapes and storytelling. Oliver Heinrich paints detailed patterns leaving out any reference as to what they might be. This invites the viewer to imagine a melodious world of colour and pacing, much like looking at clouds.  In contrast, self taught John Cadiz tells stories of his past; including Trinidad carnivals, a religious upbringing and critical eye onto notions of privilege as metaphors.

About the Artists:

Oliver Heinrich
Heinrich was born in Berlin and was obsessed with scribbling at an early age, to the point of ripping down the wallpaper in our apartment so that he could draw on the back. In Toronto at school, he was always “that kid that could draw” and almost always in trouble for it. Scribbling over notebooks and drawing while he should have been studying was a source of constant anguish for him. Since the beginning of his creative exploration, Heinrich has learned to define himself by the conflict that seems to exist between making Art and participating in society.
John Cadiz
Cadiz was born and raised in Trinidad. He contemplates the plurality of his French/Irish/Spanish ancestry amidst a strict Catholic upbringing. Cadiz emigrated to Canada in 1977 and worked as a graphic designer to support himself. During a rather stressful period about twenty years ago Cadiz started to paint.
Join us on January 5th 7-10pm on the second floor of the Gladstone Hotel for the Opening of Art Squared.
