WorldPride at the Gaystone 2014

As a queer-owned hotel, we’re gay-friendly year-round and we’re especially looking forward to hosting the world in Toronto in 2014.

We’re back with even more events that make us sexy, political and proud. We’re making the Gaystone the epicenter of queer destinations to celebrate the West End and all it’s diverse, beautiful communities.

WorldPride at the Gaystone generously supported by our friends at Mill St. Brewery.

Mattachine

Ballroom  |  9pm  |  $10
John Caffery presents the semi-legendary NYC dance party Mattachine! Spinning Vintage Vinyl from Queer Yesteryear. John Cameron Mitchell (“Hedwig & the Angry Inch”) along with “Shortbus” collaborators Paul Dawson and PJ DeBoy and performance artist Amber Martin started hosting and deejaying Mattachine dance parties monthly over six years ago at New York City’s oldest gay bar, Julius’, where in 1966, America’s first gay rights organization, the Mattachine Society, protested the city’s then antiquated anti-gay laws. The parties revived the languishing bar, which has recently been granted eligibility for landmark status, and since then Mitchell and his partners have brought their carefully-curated songs of queer yesteryear–hand-made classic rock, early pop standards, soul, funk, punk, country, New Wave, old school hip hop–to nearly a dozen cities around the United States, and internationally, to Berlin and Brazil.

That’s So Gay: On the Edge – Opening Reception

2nd Floor Gallery  |  7-10pm  |  FREE
That’s So Gay launched 5 years ago as a flirty protest, re-claiming an insult in the face of homophobia. 5 years later, on the eve of World Pride, we move the conversation of what it means to be LGBTTI2QQ artists beyond its most narrow understanding. Curated by Syrus Marcus Ware, That’s So Gay: On the Edge expresses an uneasiness with simplicity and suggests an impending switching of the record. The exhibition firmly plants disability arts as central to the discussion, and positions artists at the intersections as the core rather than the margins of the dialogue.
