Millie Chen, artist of room 417, The Chinoiserie Room, exhibits and lectures internationally, most recently in China, France and Brazil. Her practice encompasses writing and public art commissions. She is Chair and Associate Professor at the Department of Visual Studies, University at Buffalo, SUNY.
In her installations, videos, actions and public interventions, Millie explores the relationship between sight, social systems, geography and phenomena, seeking to probe the perceptual assumptions of the audience. Her interest lies in the interrelation of image and coded, sensorial space as key to defining cultural experience.
In her installations, actions and public interventions, Millie works with the functions and myths surrounding the cultural body through experiments with biology, geography and phenomenon. She utilizes the capacity of immaterial elements (e.g. sound, scent) to impart a sense of tactility and space but also as triggers for cross-cultural embodiment and transformation. Within her visual art practice the act of looking is subtly interrogated.
