On the Saturday night, October 27th, of // THE ANNUAL //, we will be hosting Raw Foo, an evening of video art screenings.
Raw Foo is a portmanteau of the 20th century expression “raw footage” and the 21st century term, “foo”—a theoretical variable used in computer programming. Together they encompass the so-called ‘new vernacular’ in media art. As digital technologies have evolved and allowed for a more seamless integration of techniques on screen, they have also unified media artists by confusing the boundaries of one discipline from another. The line between what makes something a film versus a piece of video art versus an animation has become increasingly blurry, if not irrelevant altogether. This screening explores this exponential overlap through the works of seven emerging artists.
Raw Foo will feature: Dennis Envoldson, Jennifer Chan, Josh Studham, Mark Kasumovic, Sarah Ann Watson, Sara MacLean, Tracy Van Oosten, with audial/visual performance by Frank Tsonis during intermission. Organized by Zach Pearl.
// THE ANNUAL // is the Gladstone Hotel’s annual independent contemporary art event, offering an open and fertile ground for engaging and emerging practices. Over the course of four days, // THE ANNUAL // brings together artists, curators, and collectives to present new work and site-specific installations.
