There are two kinds of criticism, the kind we see on Twitter, and then the kind we learn something from. One is a constant negative nattering that goes on and on and never leads to anything other than hurt feelings and resentment and all that fun stuff, and the other is actually something useful. The useful kind of criticism doesn’t come out of the dark nooks of the Twittersphere, it comes from the wonderful world of art!
The upcoming PLUS Art Festival is all about the good kind of criticism. Painting, Photography, Panels, and Polemics; this three day festival is going to bring a plethora of engaging work and dialogue to the Gladstone Gallery from June 8-10.
PLUS Art Festival works with and supports artists who have completed an MFA. As anyone who’s ever had a critique of their work knows, it’s both a challenging and rewarding experience. Hearing people’s thoughts and feelings about one’s work provides a chance to learn and grow, and it’s not all negative! MFA candidates know this process well, and the amazing MFA artists on PLUS Art Festival’s roster challenge ideas and push boundaries.
The festival also features thought-provoking panels and talks that are sure to create new ideas and deploy meaningful discourses around the role of criticism:
A timely piece of programming, the first Sunday panel discussion on the online world of art-criticism is called Click-Bait and Open Letter Wars. Come to learn about how the online world of art criticism has become more fast-paced and polemical than ever.
The second Sunday panel dives into the world of art collection. This one will cover everything from how prices are set, to how Instagram is changing the world of art dealing across the board. As always, a critical eye is key to understanding the effects of digitization.
Finally, for the finale of the weekend, Award Fever; the Proliferation of the Art Prize takes a critical look at the role of art prizes. How many prizes is too many? Do prizes help build an artist’s career? Does the current proliferation of the art prize devalue its place on artists’ CVs?
There’s going to be a lot of food for thought happening from June 8-10th. The Gladstone Hotel is excited to be hosting PLUS Art for their third ever festival, and we invite everyone to come down and engage with the artists, speakers and organizers.
Until then, get critical and make sure to stay off Twitter!
