January is all about Design in Toronto. From the Design TO Festival to our very own Come Up To My Room exhibition and beyond, there is no shortage of amazing design-related events happening in Toronto.
As part of our Ways to Stay blog series, here are our top picks for how to experience the best of design in the city this month!
Step into Come Up To My Room
Jan 16-19th, The Gladstone’s alternative Art, and Design Show
Come Up To My Room’ (CUTMR) is an annual 4-day alternative design exhibition created and produced by the Gladstone Hotel (that’s us!). Art and design intersect, with the historic hotel becoming a platform for site-specific installations. Visitors can explore, discover and engage in conversation with the artists. CUTMR presents temporary projects that occupy and alter spaces in dramatic, conceptual, or experimental ways. This is different from our 37 permanent artist-designed hotel rooms, some of which will be on display during the festival.
The Famous Love Design Party
The Love Design Party is the official celebration for both #CUTMR2020 and the DesignTO Festival! Held on the Saturday of Come Up To My Room (Jan 18), this is the place for all design lovers to be — DJs Regina Gently and Phil Villeneuve will throw down while you dance the night away with Toronto’s art and design community. Stay in an Artist-Designed Hotel Room
All 37 rooms at the Gladstone have been carefully designed and considered by local and international artists, creating a unique experience for each guest that stays at the hotel!
Use code CUTMR20 for 20% off a hotel room during the exhibition!
The Garden of Secrets: The Future of Sustainable Design
Celebrating its 10th year, Design TO highlights all things art and design — from architecture to interior spaces, sculpture, and ceramics to art and the future of food, the festival showcases both established and emerging designers and artists, creating accessible programs for all to enjoy.
Film Screening Jan 19th, 6-7:30 PM, presented by DesignTO
‘The Garden of Secrets’ is a documentary film exploring the value of looking to nature for design solutions and reveals botanical gardens as the ultimate “idea libraries”.
The event will entail a screening of the film followed by a conversation with leading experts in biomimicry and biophilic design, speaking to how designs inspired by the natural world strike the perfect balance between innovation and environmental respect, contributing to the betterment of humanity and a greener future.
