Where do we start? Civic Engagement Series

September 18 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:00pm on Tuesday, repeating until October 16, 2018

Do the ongoings of Provincial and Municipal politics lately have you wondering if the world is ending, and asking on a practical level, what can I do? Do you need a place to ask what seem like questions you should know the answer to without being judged? Questions like:

What does a city councillor do?
Why is the TTC frozen in time?
Why is my rent so high and will it ever go down?
How do I know if I am “progressive”?
Am I gentrifying my neighbourhood?

As a community hub, the Gladstone Hotel wants to help! Leading up to our October 22nd Mayoral Election, each Tuesday evening will be home to a civic engagement series, guest curated by Zahra Ebrahim! Each event will be a place to ask and learn from experts what exactly is happening in local politics, to meet people asking the same questions you are, and help YOU understand how to make an informed decision on Election Day. (We’ll also close each event with topical, Toronto-themed trivia!)

We are a *safe space and judgement free zone* to discuss and debate your ideas. Come and ask the question you wish someone could help you answer (but you don’t know where to ask, or it feels embarrassing not to know). There’ll be room for anonymity, there will be room to take space.

If this doesn’t help raise your spirits and get you excited about having the opportunity to engage in local democracy – we have an extensive drinks list that might do the trick!

SCHEDULE:
August 28th
The Politics of Cycling in Toronto
Why is the TTC frozen in time?
Guest speakers: Yvonne Bambrick, author of the Urban Cycling Survival Guide and Steve Munro, author and transit advocate!

Series will occur every Tuesday night from August 28 – October 22!

Topics coming soon!
