Winter has a tendency to breed bad habits. Who wants to go for a run or grab healthy groceries when you can’t feel your face? With summer coming up fast, we’ve invited certified nutritional practitioner Dee Buryk to come back and lead her popular Get School’d Workshop ‘Healing Your Gut’. Why? Because good health begins in the gut. By focusing on this one common location, you can get results such as; mental clarity, regular digestion, a healthy body weight, improved energy, glowing hair and skin and much more.
Dee is a Certified Nutritional Practitioner, yoga instructor and Founder of Growing Goddesses. She’s also a super rad lady. We sat down with the health guru to discuss her background and upcoming workshop on June 1. Tickets are available on Eventbrite here.
Tell us about your background. How did you get involved in health and wellness and what are you working on now?
I spent many years in the fashion industry coaching young models. The more I taught, the more I realized that these beautiful young women didn’t need to learn how to prepare for castings in order to feel good about themselves, they needed to learn to take care of themselves. I began studying yoga and nutrition. As I incorporated positive activities into the classes, I began to see each girl transform in this incredible way. I started to expand my practice to the public but my major focus is on empowering young females through a program I founded called Growing Goddesses.

With spring coming, a lot of people are eager to break out of a winter hibernation and embrace a healthier season. I read that 60-80% of our immune system is located in our gut. Why is the gut described as the gateway to the health?
You are absolutely right. Without a healthy gut, our digestive system, our immune system, our metabolism, our skin, even our brain begins to be compromised. There are 10 times as many microbes in our body then there are human cells. These microbes live in communities in symbiosis (what we call microbiomes). The health of these communities determine our overall health. Essentially, you are more then what you eat; you are what you absorb, assimilate, and eliminate. This is the job of the gut and the epicentre of our health.
Everyone is different but for you personally, how did your health and well-being start to improve when you embraced natural bacterias and gut-healthy foods in your diet?
This may sound wild but as soon as I got back into nature and stopped worrying about getting dirty, I found my immune system, my skin, and my energy improved vastly. As for digestion, probiotics! I often have sauerkraut but when needed, I will take probiotics. They are like little miracle workers in a bottle.
Healing your gut is not about deprivation or uncomfortable detoxes. How does this tie into your approach/philosophy towards wellness as a nutritional practitioner?
In the past, when working with clients, I have found that detoxes can only ever work as a restart button but when used incorrectly they can become a form of deprivation. This is something that isn’t sustainable and in the long run confusing for the mind as well as our bodies. Instead, when we focus on healing the gut, we can easily remove a few toxins, replace them with healthy habits, and introduce more good bacteria into our system without feeling like we have to turn our lives upside down in order to feel balanced and healthy.
You led this workshop to rave reviews in January! What are some things people will learn and take away from the class on June 1?
Oh, thank you! The workshop is developed to learn more about how our gut works but also is catered to the individuals needs/concerns. I have designed a workshop that teaches you to read signs about your own gut, ways to rebalance using a customized support plan (diet, lifestyle, herbs), a hands on sauerkraut lesson – all packaged in a fun interactive way!
