I was SO excited that Awna Teixeira was booked for a gig in the Melody Bar. I’ve seen her perform many many times, first in Victoria, BC as part of the Derby, then with Barley Wik, and finally with Po’ Girl (where they sold out venues around the world). She’s the kind of dynamic performer and talented musician that always has people asking afterwards “Who was that singer with the big blue eyes?”. It helps that she plays nearly every instrument possible and has a voice that makes you want to close your eyes and drift away.
Now she’s finally released a solo album and playing a gig in Toronto where much of her Portuguese family live. Since she’s always touring we didn’t have time to sit down & chat but she did answer some questions while using the free McDonald’s wifi off the highway in Michigan!
Kaleb: Besides all your family connections in town, what else do you love about visiting Toronto?
Awna: I actually miss eating chocolate popsicles on the edge of a curb in my sneakers in Toronto. So if I am coming there in the summer I make sure that happens to me at least a few times.
Kaleb: You’ve been all over the world, what are a couple things you always pack with you?
Awna: Besides the necessary things to stay clothed and clean, I always pack my flash light, some rope and my sling shot. On top of that my bikini and either my stuffed monkey Albert or my little plastic paint pony Chester. I like to be prepared for anything!
Kaleb: Have you met Dolly Parton? We love her. (and have a 12 foot cutout of her in our office)
Awna: Sadly I have not yet met Dolly Parton. She is one of my favourites though. Oddly enough she is the artist people most think I sound like. I don’t hear it, but she is the most common reference, Which makes me squeal in delight every time.
Awna plays here Thursday July 11th for a free show starting at 9pm.
