Common Object

March 1 – 24
Opening Night Reception: March 1 | 6:30-9pm
Fourth Floor Gallery
The Gladstone is proud to partner with the Etobicoke School of the Arts to offer young artists in our community their first opportunity to show their work in a professional gallery setting.
Common Object developed from Grade 9 Visual Arts students choosing a common object from everyday life that had personal significance. The students transformed their objects in ways that reveal personal meaning. Strategies such as altering scale, materials, functionality and utility were encouraged and opened up dialogues around conditions specific to their own lives. The remarkable insights gained were diverse, touching on relationships, anxiety, gender, physical limitations, bullying,
identity, and displacement.

Teacher Heather Raymont says, “I have been using the Common Object project for over 10 years as a strategy for students to make art that is personal to them and it has proven to be a strong vehicle to voice their concerns, struggles and personal histories.

Individual artists’ statements of intent can be found in the booklets located within the exhibition.
