The fabulous and graceful Brooke Lynn Hytes of Rupaul’s Drag Race fame fouetted into the hotel this month to shoot a promo video with Gay Cities and Tourism Toronto promoting our city as a top tourist destination for queer travellers. As part of the shoot Brock Hayhoe, the man under the makeup, sat down with our very own founder and creative director Christina Zeidler to chat about what the hotel has meant for Toronto’s queer communities and how West Queen West has evolved into the diverse and inclusive hub it is today.
Starting in the hotel’s Second Floor Gallery, the pair chatted surrounded by the art of dozens of queer artists as part of the hotel’s annual Pride exhibitions. Hayhoe, who was more familiar with Toronto’s Church Street queer scene was delighted to learn more about West Queen West and how there is little separation between queer and straight culture in this area anymore. In West Queen West and Parkdale, people are just humans, not defined by sexuality and gender.
They then went on to take a walk around the neighbourhood, stopping into other queer owned establishments like the Beaver, a lively bar with diverse queer programming.
Settling back at the hotel, Hayhoe went up to his hotel room, the Tower Suite to take a quick rest before heading out as Brooke Lynn Hytes to her old stomping grounds in the Gay Village. Our wonderful friends at Public Butter, an eclectic vintage shop a stone’s throw away from the hotel, outfitted the room with a rolling rack of over-the-top outfits for Brooke Lynn to play with.
It was a blast to share our hotel and hood with Canada’s most famous Queen! We can’t wait to have them back!
